Advice on Materials, Manufacturing & Repair Methodology | Metallurgy & Failure Analysis | Training for Engineers

Metex exists to help engineers make better decisions.

Many years of experience and learning are channelled into the advice provided, along with a strong desire to see the job done right.

Our Services

  • To help you make the best decisions, using a lifetime of experience in metal product manufacturing and repair using a wide range of processes. Many years of failure investigation learnings are also applied to your project, to head-off potential premature failure.

  • It’s important to know that the material you plan to use is of good quality. And if failure has happened you need to know why, so another expensive repeat can be avoided. Many years of industrial experience and failure investigation learnings are here to help.

  • Why keep repeating the same old expensive mistakes? This 1-day intensive training is jam-packed with really good solid info to help your engineers avoid making the expensive mistakes that others have already made. This is many decades of industrial learning packed into 1 day.

Failure Prevention & Material Awareness Intensive Training

This training is extremely practical and loaded with real examples. It is suitable for everyone in the engineering industry:
Engineering Directors & Managers, Tradies & T/A’s, Designers, Specifiers/Purchasers, Apprentices/Trainees, Maintenance Engineers, Welders, and Graduates.

The intention of this training is to alert engineers to very important basic principles to help avoid built-in failure, and to highlight some scary issues to be aware of when sourcing bolts, nuts, and steel (incl. stainless and alloy steel). It is extremely beneficial for young engineers to get the benefit of decades of experience without having to make expensive mistakes!

Topics covered:

  • Preventing Welding Failure

  • Failure of Bolts & Nuts (Good & Bad)

  • Poor Quality & Incorrect Material

  • Stress Raisers

  • Steel Processing Problems

  • Fatigue & Fracture Analysis

  • Material Selection & Ordering

  • Special Material Recovery & Heat-treatment Techniques

  • Material Certificates (& how badly they can be wrong)

  • Steel Grade & Properties Charts-Diagrams

  • Understanding Additive Manufacturing (AM) or “3D Printing”
    of Metal Products

About Barry

Trade Certificate in Toolmaking | NZCE in Mechanical Engineering | Marine Engineer 3rd class (steam)

Barry spent 4 decades fully immersed in heavy engineering and metal-product manufacturing specialising in hot-forging, heat-treatment & failure analysis. In this time he has made high-spec customised critical components for every industry imaginable. As well as doing some centrifugal and sand casting, he also worked on research projects for Titanium alloy powder consolidation, running powder-to-solid Titanium alloy extrusions. Barry is a founding shareholder & Director of RAM3D, a world-leading production manufacturer of full-strength metal 3D-printed products in Stainless 316L & 15-5-PH, Inconel 625 & 718 and Titanium 6-4 alloys.

Barry founded Metex in 2017, to transition into his current role as an engineering consultant and trainer. The consulting role covers Materials (mostly engineering steels), Heat Treatment, Manufacturing & Repair Methodology and Failure Analysis
